Here are some of the major components that you might add into your goal-directed email script. If you haven’t already, please read my article on what the goal-directed approach is to finding a job you enjoy. Of course, this is just one approach of many different kinds of career and job search techniques. Please keep in mind that this approach is very direct – and it differs from an information interview.

Here are some key pieces that you might include within your email script, and not necessarily in this order. Remember, these are just ideas and guidelines, and every letter will be different.

Introduction

Introduce yourself and be up front about why you’re getting in touch with this particular company and person. Although you may be looking for a job – don’t state that explicitly. Instead, focus on how you can contribute to this person, department or company. Remember to always focus on what is in it for them. Explain that you’re looking for opportunities where your competencies can make a difference.

Who Are You?

Briefly state your current occupation and/or career field that you are working in (or were previously working in) and/or the educational program that you recently completed if relevant.

An accomplishment

You might even add in a notable accomplishment or state what some of your key responsibilities were. You can summarize this as well. Keep it short and to the point.

Your Credibility

Show them you’ve already done your research and that you now want to clarify questions with a person who is currently working in the role/industry. This indicates that you are serious about the learning process and that you aren’t wasting anyone’s time asking basic questions that you could easily find online.

Ask for a Meeting

Pop the question to learn if they would be interested in meeting with you, for the specific purpose of exploring how your skills and expertise might be of value within their company. Don’t ask for a job as this is too focused on your needs.

Show gratitude / Express Appreciation

Express appreciation for their time and consideration of meeting with you. Do not be over confident or assumptive.

Example of a Goal-Directed Email Script to Send to Prospective Employers

Hello ___________(insert name),

My name is ______, and I’m a professional in the nanotechnology sector. I’m reaching out with the intention of exploring how my accomplishments and skills might add value to your company. Based on my research I am aware your start-up company is one of the few local nano-engineering competitors providing security services for the military and government. In particular, I am intrigued by the  implementation of your scanners that incorporate millimeter-wave imaging solutions to detect security issues. I recently finished my diploma in nanotechnology systems at NAIT, and am eager to apply my skills and knowledge in nano-enhanced sensors and devices to various security problems, threat detection, and military and government applications in general. I would be delighted to explore how my background might be an asset to some of your current projects in threat detection. Would you be interested in connecting over a brief meeting to discuss how my education and skills might be of direct relevance to your company’s goals? I appreciate your time and consideration, and hope to hear back from you soon.

Those are some of the main components of a goal-directed email script that you can send to those employers on your target list. Use your own words, style, and tweak the script to capture your authentic self.

It’s always a great idea to have someone that you know read over your script before you send it out. Remember, you may only get one shot to make a good first impression, so be sure to invest some time into it.
